Summer Family Pictures

IMG_0906.JPG

Spring and summer is a perfect time of year to schedule those family portraits. Personally,  for outdoor sessions we aim for dreamy evening light, green fields (or lush foliage), and colorful southwest accents for your sessions ideal natural backdrop.

I have had several inquiries for dressing the family for professional photos recently,  so what better time to educate, then now! We’ve had our family portraits taken a few times and one of the hardest parts is trying to figure out what everyone is going to wear. Most times (because, like you, I’m an over scheduled busy mom) I wake up the morning of the session and scramble to throw something together, which never leaves me overly impressed. I’ve learned over time that you need to have a plan IN ADVANCE! The most successful sessions, are the prepared ones! We can help assist you in making ideal clothing, and palette suggestions for your session! Professional photos are not cheap. Wearing a TNMT shirt inside out because it’s the only plain white tee your son has is not going to cut it. These are photos that will adorn your walls and make you smile every single day. Let us shot it louder for everyone in the back... Yes, the outfits matter.

Here are a few do’s and don’ts for what to wear in a family photoshoot:

First and vitally important, do not dress everyone in the same exact outfit. The reason you are most likely having your family photographed is to hold on to the memories that you are creating at this time in your life. Having said that, wear clothing that reflects just a bit of your personality. It’s best to settlei on a color family and then choose your accent color(s). Incorporate different shades of these colors throughout everyone’s outfits. Mixing in patterns is a great way to keep the look casual and not too “matchy matchy”.

Clothing/fabric with texture(linen, denim, lace, etc.) photograph beautifully, especially if you are thinking of displaying these photos in black and white. Stay away from clothing with large logos, and pin stripes. Accessories are a super quick way to add personality to everyone’s overall look, or add that perfect pop of bolder color.

To recap/illustrate…..

Don’t…. dress everyone exactly the same way. Why? It’s boring, and you’ll all blend. Go for a cohesive look, not matchy-matchy.

Do….. choose colors that compliment each other. Mixing shades of a certain color or prints in the same color family are easy ways to add more pizazz. See sample image of summer below.

Don’t….forget about the shoes, and socks! Professional photographs are an investment and the details (like shoes AND socks) matter!

Do.….think about your home and where you’d like to hang your portraits. Use the color schemes in your home as inspiration and dress in classic tones that compliment accordingly.

With these tips in mind, I’ve come up with a few of my favorite summer combinations! See examples below!

IMG_0907.JPG

Panetone

Being that Pantone’s color of the year is coral, I’d also maybe mention it as a notable pairing color as well in the palette above.

Blue

Blues and whites are all about being bold and crisp. With a slightly nautical vibe, blues and white (particularly navy) are the perfect canvas for adding in a 3rd pop of color – but greens/torquioise or bright colors like yellow and orange will add a sunnier disposition). Don’t go overboard if you decide to add in a 3rd color – do this in accessories.

Plaid(s)

Going for a more casual, everyday vibe? Plaid is a timeless print that can surprisingly be mixed and matched very easily. Keep at least one common color to weave everything together and dressing one or two family members in a solid color is a good tip if you are afraid it’s too much. For example, enjoy my family Christmas card from 2018 below!

Hopefully this helped make what to wear in your summer family photoshoot a little less scary?? Family pictures are supposed to be memorable, and fun. Don’t take that experience away by worrying about wardrobe! If it’s too much to handle, send us a note! We are more than happy to make recommendations.

The best advice I can give is start with mom. Then piece together children, and finish planning dad’s wardrobe.. that’s the best place to consider starting!

Again, don’t hesitate to ask any questions!!

Permission To Be Beautiful

IMG_4020.JPG

As a photographer, I often get women apologizing for being awkward, or their smile, or their bad makeup, or hair day. As I sit here and edit these galleries, I can't help but think -don't apologize, you're beauty is captivating. Now, obviously I too have bad hair days, or even times after a big lunch I feel like I'm carrying a food baby, I get it! I'm not saying we cannot be insecure, because there is some humility in truly being insecure. But ladies, you're beautiful. Trust me to capture that.

IMG_3480.JPG

Your hair blows in the wind, rock it. Nothing is more stunning then a natural breeze to settle the hair away from your face. It's stunning, it's natural, it's real, it's beautiful. Leave it!

IMG_4036.JPG

I’m aware that it really can be this hard to step outside of our bubble, feel power and own who we are as women. Ladies, it's my personal goal as an artist to reassure you - you look beautiful. I want to empower women to feel comfortable in their skin. Even if there is something your uncomfortable with, there are ways around not focusing on that particular point. As a photographer, we use lighting, creative posing, and a variety of techniques and tools to assure, everything is fine, you look fabulous.

As an artist, I feel it's time to give a reminder... We understand the importance of taking ownership of our work we are here to do, and I will. One of the things that most excites me is when I see a client actually trusting and feeling beautiful, there is a natural sense of ease that comes over her during her session.

My clients should feel fierce, and empowered.
Remember you are YOU
so feel more like you. Act more like you - with me.

WE ARE WOMEN.

FullSizeRender.jpg

WE ALL need to be united in this. We all need to help each other out, and remind each other that even though it may be a fat pants day, or makeup free day... it doesn't take away from your beauty. Own it. Represent it. Let me show the world that it doesn't matter what molds they try to say is picture perfect. Let's prove, you are picture perfect. (Even in your fat pants.) Lets be honest, there was a day I wouldn't be caught DEAD in my yoga pants at the store... then as I got older, I realized, like truly realized, it doesn't matter what I wear... I am a beautiful person, inside and out. If I feel this way, it will radiate, and no one will care what paint splattered tee I'm wearing.

IMG_3303.JPG

I learned to stand up and shine.
I learned to speak my truth with pride.
I learned that it was never about what I was wearing, it was how I was carrying myself.

FullSizeRender.jpg

This being said, I want my clients to feel this way. Lose control! Stand up and shine during your artistic session. Take pride in your beauty. Carry yourself with the understanding that no matter what you do, you are captivating.

I want you to underand, I'm giving you permission to say to yourself, "I am beautiful."

IMG_3664.JPG

It may not be often you have an occasion when you have an excuse to dress up and get dolled up, utilize your scheduled sessions with our studio to dig out that special occasion dress. Buy something new. Have your hair done, paint your nails. Do whatever you have to do to get to an accepting point that you are allowed to feel beautiful. At the end of this post, we will post links to local businesses we recommend to look, and feel beautiful!

IMG_4044.JPG

I want you to stand out.
I want your experience to be different.
I want you to feel beautiful.

From your photographer, your creative stylist, your currator of art:

You look beautiful.
Stunning.
Gorgeous.

 Repeat. After. Me.

I AM BEAUTIFUL.

A message from Tin Wagon Boutique:

"I offer styling sessions because I can bring a creative element to an outfit that not only flatters a woman's body type, but also showcases her personality. Fashion doesn't have to be black and white, I want to show people the art of shopping and show them that it is okay to step outside of the box a little and explore new styles that could be extremely flattering on them. If you are confident you can pull anything off! I am here to help women feel beautiful. I think a styling session prior to a photography session is important because who wants to stress about the outfits!? Why not let someone experienced in that area take care of that for you. I can help pull together all of the outfits, the colors, and overall look! I opened TWB July of 2016 and my Vision for the store was to bring something different to the community. I wanted to offer trendy fashion at an affordable price and I wanted to offer fashion for all sizes because no one should be turned away ! My vision has always been to help women feel beautiful and confident- it goes much deeper than just selling clothing for me.
